Bugged by Pantry Pests

Updated: Jan 7, 2022

Q. I may have overbought some supplies that have been stored in my pantry for a few months. Now I am noticing some bugs in my pantry. Where are they coming from and what do I do? - Kelly, Harleysville

A. Pantry pests are quite common and where they are coming from can be a bit of a mystery. Some beetles, weevils and months like grains, rice and dried beans. Others prefer flour, dried fruit or herbs. If you keep dry pet food, that can also be a source for these pests.

Most pantry pests do not cause harm to your family, pets or home. But they can destroy your stored food and they can be difficult to get rid of. Eliminating pantry pests is not a do-it-yourself job because you need to correctly identify the pest in order to apply the correct treatment for safe control.
